When i was in Portsmouth I visited the historic Dockyard and came across some blue prints and working drawings on display, which put my basic drawings to shame!. It was amazing how such accuracy could be achieved by hand and gave me a deeper appreciation for hand based skills.
It comes back again to what I have said in other sections about living in the digital age and is there still a place for hand based skills when computers do a better and faster job of tasks? We are teaching design and technology and supposed to be keeping up to date with the latest advances, are we doing students an injustice by teaching them these old skills? Will they even need these skills any more? .... Im still undecided about this.
But what I do know is my hand based working drawings are pretty crap.
